At The House of Vintner we are huge fans of the Baker's Delight Christmas cake and that's really saying something!

My Great grandmother's cake and pudding recipe has been passed down in my family for generations! And I have to admit, I don't buy Christmas cakes. Pre-packaged, mass-produced Christmas cake is not my thing. In my experience they can be dry, boring and lack flavour, they crumble and are generally just very ordinary and they seem to go off very quickly! Grandma must have used plenty of Brandy to preserve hers because they lasted for eons!

Last week we received our review package from the wonderful people at Baker's Delight and it was with a little fear and trepidation that I opened the tin. And what a gorgeous tin it is too may I just say! And it keeps the cake beautifully!

What a pleasant surprise to find this rich, moist and flavoursome cake! It is absolutely divine! This cake tastes and cuts like it just came out of your kitchen, fresh-baked and ready to go on the table to share with those nearest and dearest!

I am going to buy one this week so I have another to share round. I was kind of sad when I finished it. The friends who were lucky enough to sample it with me, while it lasted, raved about it too and went back for seconds and thirds. Unusual, because generally speaking fruitcake is not a huge hit with friends or family! It seems like they are a thing of the past... but not anymore! Bakers Delight have brought back and totally revamped with humble Christmas Cake with complete success!

The House of Vintner is always proud and excited to promote anything Hunter Valley related, and when it's a spectacular like this, we couldn't be more excited! The Hunter Valley Gardens are one of our favourite places to visit while we're in Wine Country, and Christmas is certainly no exception!

For the fifth year running, Hunter Valley Gardens is set to host Christmas Lights Spectacular, Australia’s biggest Christmas lights display and the largest display of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere. A wonderful experience for the whole family to enjoy, the Gardens will be alive with colour every night from Thursday 10th November, 2011 until Saturday 14th January, 2012 (excluding Christmas Day and Night).

Christmas Lights Spectacular has won the prestigious Hunter Region Tourism Award for ‘Best Festival or Event’ for three years running, placing the Hunter Valley Gardens event into the Hall of Fame within this category. This year, make sure to get all your friends and family down to the Gardens to see what all the fuss is about!

General Manager, Kyle McKendry says, “It is such an honour to be placed in Hunter Region Tourism’s Hall of Fame. Each year the event has been getting bigger and more spectacular. We are so excited to share with the public all the new additions to the lights display this year. We can certainly promise that it will not disappoint.”

This year’s Christmas Lights Spectacular has an amazing new music and light display as well as over a million Christmas lights on show throughout designated areas of Hunter Valley Gardens. The event includes a special visit from Santa, with Santa photos available, a range of entertainment, as well as food and beverage stalls.

There will also be a number of new and astonishing features including The Twelve Days of Christmas music and light display in the Border Garden, the cactus musical extravaganza, and the three mega trees that are an incredible 12, 9 and 6 metres high. There are also new lights and music displays throughout the Storybook Garden and the greatest story ever told at the nativity scene.

Gates will open nightly from 6.30pm, with pre-lights entertainment and food stalls so that families can make an evening of it. The lights display will commence at 7.30pm.

Entry to Christmas Lights Spectacular will be $12.50 for children aged between four and 15 and $17.50 for adults and children 16 and older. Children aged three and under receive free entry and every child will receive a FREE glow stick. If guests have visited the Gardens during the day they are entitled to a discounted entry to the Christmas Lights Spectacular of $10 per adult and free entry for children with a receipt as proof of entry.

New release Hunter Valley Semillons will be the guests of honour at the inaugural Hunter Valley Uncorked Festival on October 12 and 13, 2011 with the Hunter Valley Wine Show Masterclasses, officially kicking off the event.

Be the first in the country to taste the Gold Medal and Trophy winning wines from the recent 2011 Hunter Valley Wine Show at the exclusive Masterclasses to be hosted by Hunter Valley Wine Show judges and award-winning winemakers who refer to themselves as the ‘Fussy Bastards’.

On October 14, 2011, #semsational, a brand new concept and fun experience, will have guests ‘speed dating’ their way through their favourite Hunter Valley Semillons, whilst meeting the passionate winemakers behind them. Discerning wine lovers will learn more about the serious but fun, fresh and crisp taste of Hunter Valley Semillon and how it is the perfect match with a Sydney summer’s day.

Sally Scarborough, Hunter Valley Uncorked Festival Event Organiser says, “Hunter Valley Semillon is a unique, yet world renowned wine style. These two Hunter Valley Uncorked events will launch the 2011 Semillons and immerse guests in the oldest winemaking region in Australia’s wine and people.”

“The passionate winemakers from Thomas Wines, DeIuliis Wines, McWilliams Mount Pleasant, Brokenwood, First Creek, amongst others, will be in attendance to mingle with guests and help them further explore the flavours of the Hunter Valley,” Ms. Scarborough said.

Held on Wednesday October 12 at Etch Restaurant, Sydney, 6.00pm - 8.30pm and Thursday October 13 at 3 Weeds Restaurant, Rozelle, 6.00pm - 8.30pm, the Masterclasses will offer an educational experience, as guests learn how wines are judged, whilst the myths of the wine show judging will be dispelled.

The classes cost $110pp and will include wines, a tasting menu and structured tuition with Hunter Valley winemakers and judges.

Coast Restaurant, Cockle Bay, will provide the perfect backdrop for #semsational on October 14, 6pm to 10pm. The event will launch the crisp fresh 2011 Semillons and showcase the varieties the Hunter Valley does best.

Hunter Valley Gardens is calling all children and parents to visit during the coming School Holidays and join the Circus! From September 24th until October 9th, Circus Avalon will bring the complete circus experience to the Gardens.

Circus Skill Workshop and Roaming Characters: 10.00am-2.00pm (Daily)

Kids, let your inner clown out as you learn how to juggle and hula hoop with the Circus Avalon workshops. Depending on your strength, there are also opportunities to learn how to use the aerial apparatus. During the day circus performers will roam around the gardens on jumping stilts and unicycles. Be sure to say hello!

Circus Avalon 2.00pm (Daily)

Each day, Circus Avalon will perform breathtaking and thrilling acts! During the 30 minute performance you will be able to watch acts on the trapeze, aerial ring and aerial ladder. You won’t be able to contain your excitement while jugglers perform their magic and clowns show you how to hula hoop.

Circus Activities 10.00am-2.00pm (Daily)

Children will have the opportunity to actually look the part of a circus performer, with circus themed face painting. They will also be able to take part in special circus themed craft activities.

Hunter Valley Gardens are also preparing to celebrate their 8th birthday, and would love for you to come and celebrate with them on the 8th and 9th of October.

In addition to all the fun circus antics of the weekend, there will be a number of fun birthday activities including free;

The Hunter Valley, Australia’s oldest and most revered wine region, has today unveiled an exciting and extensive rebranding campaign. The campaign will see the region transformed into a refreshed and contemporary premier wine destination by merging traditional and modern marketing methods.

Merging the old with the new, the four month campaign will feature tag lines such as ‘Breathe a little deeper, laugh a little louder, love a little more.’ ‘Hunter Valley Semillon has been described as the best white wine to come out of Australia. That doesn’t necessarily mean you will like it.’

Using taglines, facts and statistics to engage consumers, the campaign aims to embrace the regions’ history and unique wine styles, while challenging the consumers’ perception of the destination.

Hunter Valley Wine Country Tourism (HVWCT) Executive Manager, Dean Gorddard said over the past nine months, HVWCT and Hunter Valley Wine Industry Association (HVWIA) have worked in unison to deliver a refreshed and contemporary wine destination brand.

“This marks a significant historic milestone for the region. Our new brand will enable the Hunter Valley to compete as a premier destination to visit, and increase consumer preference to purchase Hunter Valley wine. This is a long term commitment that requires sustained investment over many years,” Mr Gorddard said.

Using social media to engage with a younger demographic, the Hunter Valley will run promotions, competitions and general discussion through online channels such as Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and bloggers to encapsulate the sophistication, ‘real’ people and rich history of the region.

“We understand the immediate buzz and excitement that social media outlets can create. We feel this works in unison with our efforts to connect with a younger demographic who are looking for a fresh and unique wine and food experience that the Hunter Valley offers.”

“Consumers value brands that give them a sense of connection. The Hunter Valley is is a sophisticated, exciting and authentic place with ‘real’ people characterised by a special tenacity, passion and wisdom that comes from a rich history. This rebrand aims to demonstrate that the Hunter Valley is in touch with contemporary lifestyle.”

“By pairing new media with traditional techniques like print and outdoor, it will allow us to show the Hunter Valley in a new light and capture audiences that previously may have been unreachable. Many people believe the Hunter Valley is unchanging, but what they don’t realise is that there is a new world waiting to be discovered,” Mr Gorddard said.

The region will also offer exclusive experiences and promotions through the introduction of a Hunter Valley passport. The ‘passport’ will be available in digital and printed format and can be requested via SMS or at www.winecountry.com.au/relax.

iFix iPhone Repairs - our preferred repairer!

We recently had the pleasure of utilising the amazing services of iFix iPhone Repairs!

Finding them on facebook through a friend was a fabulous connection to have... here’s why...

My husband’s phone had been through the wars. Just a few weeks after he purchased his iphone he dropped it while getting off the bus to go to work one day. Needless to say the screen smashed!

From that point on, his phone seemed to be a floor magnet. Wherever he went it seemed to gravitate towards the ground... once he even dropped it down a drain – thankfully it was retrievable!

The screen was smashed or damaged on at least three or four occasions! It was a disaster to say the least! (See photo below)

Yes... hard to believe this could be repaired.

My phone on the other hand, didn’t have a mark on it, and yet mine gave up the ghost and died for no apparent reason while I was in hospital. The fact that my husband could keep dropping his and it kept working was nothing short of a miracle. As you can see by the pic above, it was pretty damaged. I hated using it. The phone was so ‘broken’ that using the touchscreen became a nightmare I avoided. Answering the phone was the first difficulty as it wouldn’t slide to unlock! I missed numerous calls that way! Sending texts on the phone was another drama and we had to constantly hold it landscape (rather than portrait) to send a text as some of the letters and numbers wouldn’t work the other way! I used to utter a big sigh every time I had to use it... and hold my breath hoping I didn’t cut my finger on the exposed edges. I was so over looking at it too!

Then I discovered iFix. I contacted Dave & Dennae to see if they could possibly ifix it. Nervously I awaited the verdict. I wasn’t sure they’d be able to! After a few questions to ascertain where the phone was at (in terms of was it working or not?) the message came back ‘We can fix it!’ I exhaled a sigh of relief.

A friend was heading down to see them and took the phone for us so we had it repaired in less than a day. The phone went in the morning and we had it back mid-afternoon (it took around an hour to fix – just to give you a guide). Thanks to Kelly for taking our phone for us and saving us the drive and postage time as well!

Not only was the service we received from iFix friendly and fabulous, but we received the phone, repaired and in perfect working order and mint condition (it looks just like a brand new one!) Now I can’t tell our phones apart, when before I’d always used the fractured screen to know whose was whose.

We are loving the results!

The House of Vintner attended this fabulous wine tasting event at Southbank Surf Club on May 12, and we’re delighted to bring you details of the fun and frivolity here...

Six top Hunter Valley Winemakers took their Hunter wines to the masses on the surfari of a lifetime!

From Melbourne to Noosa, the New Generation took the wine-scene by storm and showed us what it was all about! Margans, Meerea Park, De Iuliis Wines, David Hook, Andrew Thomas and Mistletoe Wines, captivated us with their liquid golds (whites) and reds from Pinot Grigoio, Semillons and Shiraz’s, to Verdelhos and Roses’ and more! Delicate and bold flavours caressed our palates, leaving us enchanted.

Brisbane turned it on for the guys and a good solid turn out filled the venue, with everyone enjoying the atmosphere. Despite the recent Brissie floods, we’re recovering and we certainly didn’t look any worse for wear! Our interstate visitors were enthralled with our beautiful city, and all our Southbank Parklands had to offer. I spoke to several people enjoying the event, many of them from out of town who were having a fabulous time!

I’m already a Hunter Valley convert as you know, I don’t need much encouraging to explore the vineyards, purchase the wines and stay a little while and just breathe out when I’m there... but having the Hunter Valley at my doorstep for this event, to try the many boutique wines on show, was the perfect ending to my very busy week! There should be more of these events!

Priced at a very comfortable $25 per head, with many many wines to appreciate that evening, we dined on Watsonia vintage cheddar and fresh bread – the perfect accompaniment! And, keeping us hydrated during the night we had the fabulous Fiji water to freshen up on! Then, it was back into the wine! My all time favourite of the night was the De Iuliius Verdelho – utterly refreshing and the perfect wine for me. I’ve long been a De Iuliius fan and when in the Hunter I like nothing better than to dine at Cracked Pepper and visit Butterflies Gallery, sharing their grounds with the De Iuliius cellar door! As part of the June long Hunter Valley Wine and Food Month, award-winning restaurant Esca Bimbadgen will proudly host ‘Hayman in the Hunter’ from Friday 3 June to Sunday 5 June, 2011. The weekend will feature superb culinary delights including a blend of local produce and exceptional wines, showcased by extraordinary talent.

Executive Chef, Glenn Bacon of Hayman, the celebrated idyllic private island resort in the Great Barrier Reef, has been issued a challenge to create a menu featuring regional Hunter Valley produce a world away from the local produce and seafood available from Chef Bacon’s tropical home.

Chef Bacon will unveil a reconcepted and renamed ‘Fontaine’ restaurant in August. Fontaine will offer a beautiful setting including stunning dining platforms over the Hayman Swan Pond. The new menu will feature contemporary Australian cuisine inspired by the finest locally sourced produce.

In his preparation to delight Esca Bimbadgen diners, Glenn Bacon said, “The menu I have selected is a sneak preview of Hayman’s Fontaine restaurant concept, with a regional twist showcasing local Hunter Valley cuisine, paired with delectable Bimbadgen wine. This year, cyclists of all ages will meet again in the beautiful wine country to participate in The Xstrata Great Hunter Cycling Events on Saturday 21st and Sunday 22nd of May. Not only will they be improving their fitness, but this year participants will also be cycling to support beyondblue and men’s health.

Depression affects around one in six Australian men at any given time, which is why this May; the Xstrata All Spokes Festival has chosen to lend a helping hand by donating part proceeds of entry fees to beyondblue. beyondblue is an Australian non-profit organisation which aims to increase awareness and improve the treatment of people with mental disorders. The Xstrata All Spokes Festival is the perfect reminder of the value exercise, fun and fresh air, can contribute to a healthy lifestyle.

The Great Hunter Grand Prix: Saturday 21st of May

New to the cycling festival this year is The Great Hunter Grand Prix, a criterium event which will be staged at The Tempus Two Vineyard on Broke Road, Pokolbin. Family, friends and spectators will be encouraged to come along, bring a picnic and indulge in some of the Hunter’s best wines whilst enjoying some exciting criterium racing.

The Great Hunter Cycling Classic: Sunday 22nd of May

The Great Hunter Cycling Classic is perfect for cyclers of all levels, from serious to touring and recreational riders. This event offers cyclists the opportunity to participate in a wide variety of individual and team challenges circumnavigating central Pokolbin. There are a number of rides available, depending on fitness level. These include the 20km Fun Ride commencing at 7.30am, 60km Short Ride starting at 8.30am or if you’re up for the challenge, the 100km Long Ride departing at 8.20am.

Given the vast spectrum of cycling experience expected at the event, riders can choose a fun, team, short or long course ride, with the flexibility of the course encouraging both non-competitive participation and elite competition options. The cost to cycle on the day depends on which category you wish to enter. Prices start from $10.

Many of Australia’s well know cyclists will also be there to lend their support. This includes Eddie Salas former Olympic Representative and 7x National Road Champion, Nathan Hass who is a Silver Medallist in the 2011 Road Championships and Jackson Leigh Rathbone and Ben Harvey who are in the NSWIS National Road Series Team. Also several of NSW’s best up and coming riders will be cycling on the day including Joshua Blick, April and Brooke Langereis who will line up for the Racing Kangaroo’s development team which is supported by Nathan Tinkler and the Tinkler Sports group.

The Xstrata All Spokes Festival also welcomes spectators and encourages competitors and their families to make a weekend of it, taking in all that the breathtaking Hunter has to offer. Apple iPhone... iCare service!

Apple recently provided me with a service that I like to call 'Apple iCare' because ... quite simply, they care! They really do stand behind their products and offer amazing service! This service is part of what makes Apple's branding so good! Not to mention their amazing products as well!

Recently my iPhone 3 died... for no apparent reason my fabulous phone stopped working, and I simply refused to downgrade to an inferior model! I know you'll tell me there are many phones on the market that are comparable to iPhone... but I love my iPhone and nothing can separate me from it! Nothing, that is, except a breakdown... mine... and that of the phone!

Being without my phone was like having my right arm cut off! I was lost! All of my contacts...gone! And then the fun began!

Thankfully I had removed ALL of my photos from the phone the day before... I was in hospital awaiting the arrival of my tenth baby (yes, I did say tenth) and I was, to be quite blunt...BORED! So I started sorting the files on my laptop and getting more organised, deleting stuff I no longer needed... ra ra ra... and then I decided to transfer the photos from the phone and go through them all! The kids tend to jam my phone with pictures... but I digress.

The next day when my husband came to visit me in hospital he picked up my phone and noticed it was 'off'! I panicked!

'No, I haven't turned it off! No it isn't flat! I just charged it!' Talk about a meltdown - ME, not the phone...

My husband immediately took it to the shop where we purchased it! They sent it off to their repair guys (down south ... wherever that is... I suspect it's in a whole other country as the communication is abysmal!)

Four weeks went by...

Still no phone! And zero communication! Apparently they don't have phones where mine went... or maybe they're all broken?

FINALLY... they called us! Perhaps they got their phones working at last!

We were told it would now cost us $280 to repair as they decided it had been dropped and was not under warranty! They decided this because the button on the side that alters the sound level was missing (there was no other damage to the phone, yet this was their explanation!) I know, this is the boring part. But this is what happened. After I refuted this and REFUSED TO PAY them they came back with the story that it had water damage! Seriously? Give me a break!

To cut a long story short, I complained bitterly and the store (of purchase) stated we should go to the Telecommunications Ombudsman! Why? Because he tells ALL of his customers this! Oh, well that's confidence inspiring. This happens often then? He coughed and spluttered his way through a lame explanation! I hung up disillusioned. I Facebooked my disappointment! My friends replied with reassuring cyber hugs, and understanding, and their own disappointment... and some timely advice...

'Go see the kids at the Apple iStore!'

Friends emailed me with the same advice!

I got hold of the 'repair paperwork' from my (read with sarcasm) 'good friends' at the place of purchase' but only half of it... or so I thought! There should have been two lots.... or so I thought...

The first lot of paperwork categorically stated there was NO water damage! Really!? Surprise me! (again insert sarcasm!)

We phoned them to ask where the rest of the paperwork was only to be told 'Oh sorry, there isn't any...the repairer confused you with someone else... there isn't any water damage to your phone!' YES WE KNOW!!!!!!!!!!!

I phoned the Apple store at Robina, Gold Coast and made an appointment!

The 'If we can't fix it in ten minutes we replace it' methodology won me over! Off we went. We drove just over an hour to get there, with a three week old newborn in tow, we negotiated and navigated our way to the store (clueless, never having been there before) with seconds to spare to our appointment! We almost missed it... but they slotted us in!

We saw a tech behind their Genius bar who was happy to assist us and replaced my phone without incident. He checked it for water damage... NONE! Well gee, surprise me! I showed him the missing button, he stated it had nothing to do with the phone not working! I knew that... the button had fallen off a good eight months before the phone stopped working! I'd never been able to load songs onto that particular phone (iTunes just wouldn't register on it for some reason!)

I now have a new phone, I've paid for an extra warranty for 12 months... only just made it by the skin of my teeth with 15 days to spare when I finally got it to Apple to be sorted! $99 will see me right for the next year with this phone.

They replaced my old phone with a brand new, working, white Apple iPhone 3 (the same as I had). I was hoping they would upgrade me, but really, after what I'd been through with the dodgy repairer I was grateful to have a working iPhone! I was mobile again! Crisis over!

Apple = Genius!

Touring the picturesque Hunter Valley

The picturesque Hunter Valley is approximately two hours north of Sydney and it is Australia’s oldest and one of its most well-known wine regions.

There is no shortage of beautiful places to visit, with over 60 restaurants, 120 wineries, 160 accommodation venues and a vast range of activities all on offer.

Vineyards were first established in the Hunter in the 1830’s and the locals, many of them from the original families, go out of their way to make every visit special. Australian wines have an excellent reputation internationally and it is a special treat to be able to sample them at the cellar door.

Other local produce is also award winning, including sensational cheeses, olive oil and olives. Famous for food and wine, the Hunter Valley is the ideal place to escape and relax for a day, a weekend or longer.

The Hunter is also well known for hosting incredible events and festivals, including Jazz in the Vines and Opera in the Vineyards.

TOURS TO THE HUNTER

Red Carpet boutique small group tours run to the Hunter on a daily basis. The standard day itinerary is below and this can be adjusted to allow for overnight stays and customised group bookings.

The day tour leaves Sydney and weaves its way up to the Hunter, you will see rural farmland, Australian natural bush, mountain ranges and grazing land as well as panoramic perspectives of the Hunter Valley from Mount View.

The property itself is 30 acres of fabulous country with approximately 5 acres of almost level grass, combined with rose gardens edging a walking path, complete with rotunda and country dam. Chickens, geese guinea fowl, ducks, Cockatoos, corellas, parrots and many more birds abound and add that real country feel, yet you are only a bird’s call from all the Hunter has to offer!!

There is a fantastic swimming pool available for guests usage on those hot summer days, perfect for a relaxing cool-down after a day of exploring, or the perfect way to start the day.

When I think of the Hunter Valley, I think of rest and relaxation; lazy days spent enjoying sun-drenched vineyards and the opportunity to indulge in the many day spas on offer, as well as a smorgasbord of decadent food and wines to delight the palate.

One of the first things I do on arrival in the Hunter is to drop my gear off in the room and then head to a massage appointment. Then I am ready to luxuriate in wine tasting, shopping, lunch in an idyllic setting, a drive to take in the sights and then a gorgeous dinner to follow.

Let me show you the Hunter at its best! It’s just a short 45 minute drive from Newcastle airport, or a comfortable two hours from Sydney and is the perfect weekend retreat when you need to get away from it all. It’s heaven at your doorstep.

Have you ever been Hot Air Ballooning? If you haven’t, now is certainly the time to try it. Fabulous views float below you in a truly unique way to enjoy the Hunter Valley. If you’re planning a romantic weekend for two, this might just be the perfect way to begin, or to propose! There are a few different carriers to choose from with experienced pilots on board and it will certainly be a journey to remember!

Wine tasting has often been one of the highlights of our trips to Pokolbin and Broke in the Hunter Valley region. The service at each Cellar Door is always welcoming and enjoyable, with not just wine tasting on offer, but chocolate, cheese, Port and other delectable items to be sampled – the Hunter becomes a complete taste sensation, coming alive in your mouth. And for those who would rather sample Beer, check out the Breweries on offer in the area. You won’t be disappointed.

Your hosts at each winery are only too happy to impart more information about the Valley and surrounding areas, so do ask them to help familiarise yourself with Wine Country! Or grab a brochure on your way out and there’s also a Tourism & Visitors Information Centre with loads of information from accommodation and fun things to do, to planning your very own Hunter Valley wedding or honeymoon. Make sure you grab yourself a complimentary copy of the current Wine Country Magazine – it has everything in it you need to know, including a map of the area.

If you’re catching a flight home bear in mind the weight of your bags upon returning so the airlines don’t slug you with an extra cost for your trouble. That can be a nasty surprise to your departure. Why not organise with your favourite winery to ship your cases of wine home to save you effort? Or find out where you can purchase from if buying in bulk. Some Cellar Doors are boutique wineries so do be aware you may need to purchase on the premises, or you can always order online when you get home.

Also on offer is the ability to have a wine bottle etched, or a personalised label attached to celebrate a special wedding anniversary, a 21st birthday, the birth of a child or any other notable special occasion. These make a really unique gift for a loved one and they look fantastic! Be sure to pack it really well for the return journey! You don’t want any broken bottles in your bag!

Concerned about drinking and driving? Not anymore. Take a gorgeous Horse and Carriage Wine Tour that will take in all of the sights, sounds and aromas of the stunning Hunter Valley. While away the hours in comfort – you won’t miss a thing!

Shopping! This would have to be one of the highlights for me! One of my favourite places to visit is the Hunter Valley Gardens Village which sports the Chocolate Shop, a kitchen store, and a shop to purchase items for your bar, there’s a candle shop, beautiful home wares and jewellery, clothing and art, ornaments and a bookstore for the avid reader plus so much more. You won’t leave empty handed and dos be sure to check out the ice cream shop and fabulous places for lunch before you leave!

If you’re a keen golfer you will be thrilled to find more than one Golf Course on location in the Hunter Valley. You can spend hours walking the green, playing to your heart’s content and then enjoy a refreshing wine or beer at the end of your sojourn. Guys, you can always take to the Golf Course while the girls go shopping, wine tasting, or while they enjoy a few hours being pampered...

The Day Spas are a heavenly retreat for you and your partner to relax and unwind before dinner or at any time during your Hunter Valley stay. There are a myriad of Spas to choose from where all of your senses will be indulged and you will leave feeling at peace and ready to take on the world! Go with the girls for a long weekend, starting off with a massage, or beauty treatment. I guarantee you’ll be booking a second one before you leave. This would have to be one of the most enjoyable parts of the Hunter Valley experience.

There are so many photo opportunities that you’ll want to be sure you bring the camera and charger, and don’t forget to pack that extra memory card to avoid disappointment when committing that sunset to memory. Try to print your photographs before you go home so you can enjoy reminiscing in the airport or shortly after you arrive back in the real world. Everyone will be dying to know what you got up to!

Just prior to Christmas I had the absolute privilege of coming across Nikki Yetman, who is the owner of the very magical ‘Through the Looking Glass’ – stunning hand painted glass products! Nikki produces the most amazing artwork, personalised for your ‘giving’ pleasure or just for you; or, you can always choose an old favourite from her range. I was particularly drawn to her beautiful tea light candle holders!

I asked Nikki to create some beautiful items for me recently, not just for Christmas but to celebrate some forthcoming birthdays, and as thank you’s! One is also a house-warming gift! Nikki is very easy to work with, super accommodating and very very talented! She operates through Facebook and is very easy to locate and contact.

With Valentine’s Day coming up now would be the perfect time to order that personalised gift for someone special! For every two mobile phones recycled over Christmas and New Year, MobileMuster will give a duck through Oxfam Unwrapped to help a family struggling against poverty in Mozambique.

With Christmas just around the corner, MobileMuster and Oxfam are asking Australians to donate a duck and help a family in need, just by recycling their old mobile phones and accessories.

For every two mobile phones recycled over Christmas and New Year, MobileMuster will purchase a duck through Oxfam Unwrapped to help a family struggling against poverty in Mozambique. MobileMuster’s ‘Old phones, more ducks’ campaign runs until the end of January 2011.

“The holiday period is a time for giving and receiving. MobileMuster is calling on all Australians to give a duck and make a difference to the planet and a family in need this Christmas,” says MobileMuster Recycling, Manager Rose Read.

According to Ms Read, many Australians have two or more old and broken mobile phones at home that could be recycled. In total, there are an estimated 16 million mobiles that could be put towards helping the planet and a family lacking basic essentials like food and a source of income.

“We can’t duck the growing issue of e-waste in Australia. Mobile phones, including their batteries, chargers and accessories are not biodegradable, but over 90 per cent of the materials in these can be recycled. Australians who recycle their old phones to give more ducks will be achieving two great outcomes this Christmas,” says Ms Read.

The Oxfam Unwrapped program has been helping families and communities in some of the poorest nations since 2005. Whilst one duck might not sound like much it can make a significant difference to the life of a family in Mozambique.

“One duck can mean the difference between nutritional health and financial security for a family in Mozambique. Families can use the eggs for food and can sell the excess at market to supply the family with a regular and reliable source of income,” says Oxfam Unwrapped spokesperson, Leigh Stewart.

According to Ms Stewart, the ducks can provide a great source of income for these families, which can contribute towards schooling and health costs.

Australia Post is helping to make it easy to recycle your old mobiles and give a duck by providing free Reply Paid recycling satchels through its 4,443 outlets.

“Electronic waste is a growing problem in Australia. We're leveraging our extensive retail network to make it easy for the community to recycle their old mobile phones,” says Ms Harris, Australia Post National Media Manager.

Recycling old mobile phones and accessories this Christmas is the perfect way to give the environment a good start to the new year and to help a family in need.

“Don’t be a goose this Christmas, recycling your old mobiles is free, easy and will make a real difference,” says Ms Read.

“Whether you hand in one, two or more mobiles, every phone will count. Be sure to ask friends and family to check their drawers and cupboards for old phones too,” says Ms Read.

Why we love it...

Camping trips with our brood mean that 'trips' back to the tent or accommodation are high traffic areas. AUSSIE MEN NEED OUR HELP GETTING IN TOUCH WITH THEIR SENSITIVE SIDE

According to new research* nearly two thirds of young Aussie guys claim to have sensitive skin – which may be unlucky for the eight out of ten women who said they would find signs such as facial redness, flaking, rashes or bumps a turn off in men. The study conducted by Gillette found that sporting more severe sensitive skin symptoms would cause eight out of ten guys to feel embarrassed, self-conscious or frustrated and close to half (46%) to postpone a first date.

With women being turned off and potentially stood up, it’s time to help men out! There are a number of things that women can do to help their man lift his grooming game and thankfully almost two thirds (64%) are confident that he would listen to their advice. Leading Australian dermatologist, Dr Lim, provides some tips.

• Not surprisingly, 60 percent of guys put signs of sensitive skin down to shaving, but shaving-related skin issues are often the result of incorrect shaving technique or using dull or poor quality blades. Using fresh, good quality blades will result in a much closer, more comfortable shave. Storing the razor in the bathroom cabinet is a good way to prolong the life of the blades as it’s away from moisture and wandering women’s hands!

At The House of Vintner we recently had the absolute pleasure of reviewing ‘Witches Falls Cottages’ on Mt. Tamborine, complete with Ripple Massage. Our stay was courtesy of the lovely Daniela, and David, where we experienced two glorious days, and it was magical.

As some of you may know, I am currently expecting my tenth baby (due February, 2011), so in some respects I suppose you could call our getaway a ‘babymoon’, another couple were also there just days before their baby's due date too. However, for us, it was really a chance to see what is on offer in our great state of sunny Queensland, and so close to our doorstep in an area that offers wineries and wine tasting, where craft shops and gift stores abound, and fabulous walks and other tourist attractions such as an amazing lookout are available for you to enjoy to complete your relaxing mountain experience!

It rained for virtually the entire time we were there, however, this didn’t dampen our spirits. Our room was heated and we enjoyed the beautiful meals provided by ‘Witches Falls’, as well as fudge from a local store, and a wonderful Mexican meal one evening, and pizza one afternoon. We visited the Nardoo Lavender gift shop and hunted for treasures on the boardwalk.

My favourite part of the journey was enjoying all our room at ‘Witches Falls’ had to offer. A beautifully appointed room awaited us – a cozy cottage that offered privacy and luxury. This gorgeous retreat boasted a spacious bathroom, beautifully designed, complete with large oval spa overlooking an atrium filled with greenery, and a glass ceiling to appreciate the stars, including when you are standing in the shower. The cottages are set apart in lush bushland that assure your privacy and comfort, and are just a short walk from the car park. Even in the rain it wasn’t a problem! Massive umbrellas are supplied for your convenience!

A private deck offers a chance to be outdoors (in better weather perhaps) however, we were able to watch the rain drench the foliage, as we cooked dinner on the barbecue, safely under cover. I would have loved to have spent more time out there... definitely next time!

The room was scented with a lovely incense, and offered a kitchenette with a good-sized bar fridge, microwave, sink and other items to complete meals in comfort. The lounge area offered a flatscreen tv visible from the couch and the bed, as well as a cd player. There are dvds at the office to choose from and a comprehensive guide on the coffee table with information about all that Mount Tamborine offers its guests.

We were treated to a divine massage thanks to ‘Witches Falls Cottages’ and Ripple Massage. It was absolute heaven! Being 28 weeks pregnant at the time, I absolutely enjoyed being pampered, however, this is something I enjoy at any time, so it was a wonderful conclusion to a very enjoyable stay indeed. Thanks to Ripple for spoiling Peter and I during our Mount Tamborine stay.

Your hosts at ‘Witches Falls’ Daniela and David go out of their way to ensure your comfort, privacy and a magical stay, evidenced by not only their facilities and the manner in which they do things, but also the guest book on the coffee table. A fabulously creative idea, a sketchpad is provided and colouring pencils, for you to create a scene of your memorable stay. The book is full of wonderful tales of honeymoon stays, and special moments ‘Witches Falls’ guests have enjoyed and shared. Sadly I am not quite artistic enough to have drawn something, but I am leaving my review of the cottages as a testament to the wonderful time we had there. We will always have lovely memories of this time spent away before our baby arrived.

I did work for the most part while we enjoyed our stay, however, it was very relaxing surrounds to work in I must say and we very much look forward to returning to ‘Witches Falls’ in the future – it’s a magical place to unwind!

Lindy and her partner were absolutely delighted to hear about their unexpected luck and happily deserted their plans for camping and stayed in one of our cottages.

A total of $30,000 was raised to assist local Organisations.

On Friday night 19th November Witches Falls Cottages won the Queensland Tourism Awards 2010 for Best Hosted Accommodation.

A big thank you goes to you, our guests, which made this year a very happy and satisfying one.

‘taking all the hard work out of the family holiday!’

Everybody loves a holiday in Queensland and I’m not just saying that because I live here and I adore it... the climate is fabulous, we have great Theme Parks and amazing beaches, we offer a truly terrific lifestyle I’ve not found matched by anywhere else in the world. Now don’t get me wrong, I’ve travelled, I’ve loved it, I’ve seen outstanding beaches... but I’m just a tad patriotic and loyal to my land... and what’s not to love after all!? Clearly, Sarah Pye thought so too when she created ‘Kids Welcome to Queensland’ – a comprehensive book that is ‘your guide to the best kid-friendly activities, tours, attractions, restaurants and places to stay!’ Amazing!

Now, where was this book twenty years ago when I needed it? Who cares... I still need it now... As you can imagine, travelling with at least 7 of my 9 children in tow I am always looking for great places to take them that are truly fun, truly kid-friendly and don’t cost a motza to go to! Now with baby number ten on the way, I have just as much reason to consider where and how we travel in the future. It’s all about making it easier!
